Penmanship, Mightier than the Sword

From being character defining, where the way you wrote something was considered part of your inner being, your core or your worth, good penmanship is now considered an anachronism.

Equal in importance to the labor and skill that goes into the writing of these scripts and indeed, any piece of good handwriting, is the instrument used to write it. Traditionally used instruments are pens and penholders, which are individually manufactured and fit into each other through a long, meticulous procedure. They are a far cry from the pens we commonly use today, with refills by the dozen.

Many believe that penmanship is gradually losing out to technology. Computers are easy, and deliver a standard product. But it is precisely this standardisation that gives us a hankering for the individual and the unique. Good handwriting still has a place in our modern, fast-paced world. The time and effort that goes into a beautiful piece of handwritten letter imbues it with a sentiment that is almost irreplaceable.
