Hong Kong’s
music scene was dominated by either traditional Chinese
opera or western music in the 60s. Although cantopop was
still evolving in the 70s, Hong Kong did not have its own
brand of music until Sam Hui came along. Few artists are
honoured with prestigious titles such as the ‘King of Rock
and Roll’ but Sam Hui, on the other hand, has no problem
joining the ranks of Elvis with his not-so-modest title, ‘God
of Song’.
The one thing that stands out about him as a singer is his
ability to connect with everyone especially the working
class. His songs are deceptively simple, with lyrics that
can be enjoyed by everyone, yet they are also complex in
their themes. Most of his songs reflect the life and
frustrations faced by the society and especially the common
people. This was not conventional among Hong Kong stars and
the public quickly bonded with him.
Though he retired in 1993, his love for music still abetted
and when he finally came back to the music scene, all his
comeback concerts were smash hits. Whatever the future may
be for him, what is certain is that he will continue to
dazzle his fans and the world with his brilliance. |
