A Shared
Heritage Between
Two Cultures
Amongst the many different
ethnic groups and sub-groups we have in Malaysia, one of the
most interesting is probably that of the Peranakan or
Straits Chinese community. Unlike their fellow Nanyang
(South Sea) Chinese in the country, many of whom are second
or third generation residents on the land, the Peranakan can
claim to have been around for more than five centuries. Thus
they have managed to blend two different cultures together
to create one that is unique to themselves. And this is
reflected in their art which shows influence from both the
Chinese and the Malay.
In her book, “Straits Chinese Porcelain: A Celebration of a
Unique Malaysian Heritage” - Datin Seri Kee Ming-Yuet
showcases her private collection of Straits Chinese
porcelain revealing dazzling pieces of art that are neither
completely one or the other but in a tribute to the coming
together of civilisations, a perfectly harmonious marriage
of both.
